Branches, Blossoms, and the True Vine

Recently, I hosted a dinner party at my home. I’m not one for traditional holiday decorations — no twinkling lights, no tree, no ribbons or bells. But I did choose a Poinsettia for the centerpiece. Classic. Seasonal. Simple. Perfect.

When I first placed it on the table, I noticed something: one side of the plant had an open space. It looked like it could use one or two more blossoms, a few more leaves, just to feel full and balanced. My instinct kicked in. I began fluffing the branches, repositioning what I could to fill that gap.

Of course, I knew there was a limit. The plant had grown as it was meant to, potted and ready for display. If I wanted to truly reshape it, I’d have to repot it, something I simply wasn’t going to do. But the gap still nagged at me. So I kept adjusting.

Then it happened. A small snap. A branch broke.

Immediately, I knew the truth: that branch was done. Detached from its source, it could never survive on its own. And yet, in my desire to make the plant “perfect,” I stuck it back into the soil, right where I thought it would fill the space. For a few days, it looked fine. Full. Plush. Perfect… until reality caught up.

That moment reminded me of John 15:1, 4–8. As I held the broken branch, I could hear those words playing over and over in my heart:

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener… No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me… Apart from me you can do nothing.”

The metaphor hit me. That branch, however beautiful, could not survive because it wasn’t connected to the vine. I began to examine my own life. How connected am I to the Vine. to Christ Himself?

We can all look “planted.” We can position ourselves near the source, try to appear fruitful, imitate the vitality of others. But if we’re not truly attached — if our roots don’t draw life from Him ...we will wither. Fruit, blossoms, leaves, all of it depends on staying connected.

This is a lesson I remind myself of daily. It’s easy to be discouraged by the failings of the church, the shortcomings of other believers, or the messiness of life. But no frustration, no disillusionment, no personal disappointment can justify disconnecting from the Vine. He is the source. He is life. He nourishes, sustains, and shapes.

When we remain in Him, our lives bear fruit that reflects the vine itself. Love. Truth. Forgiveness. Intentionality. Selflessness. Purpose. When we detach, even just slightly  our branches wither, no matter how beautifully we try to arrange ourselves.

So I ask myself, and I ask you: what vine are you connected to? What is your fruit showing the world? Are you drawing life from the source, or merely trying to look like you belong?

The broken branch was a small lesson, but a sharp one. Beauty and effort alone cannot sustain life. Only connection rooted, alive, flowing from the Vine can.
