Meeting Dr. O'Ryan: Prepping for an MRI

After Dr. Serena referred me to a specialist, I set up an appointment with Dr. Daniel O’Ryan, an ob-gyn here in New Orleans. Walking into his office, I felt that mix of nerves and quiet hope. The waiting room was still, the kind of still that makes your own thoughts loud. When my name was called, I straightened my shoulders and followed the nurse to the exam room.

Dr. O’Ryan came in with a calm, serious energy. He introduced himself, flipped through my records, and listened as I talked about the swelling, the pressure, and the discomfort that had become my daily rhythm.

After a minute, he looked up and said, "Leata, I need a clearer picture before we move forward. I’m scheduling you for an MRI. That will show the size, location, and impact of the abnormal growths and anything else that could be affecting you."

I nodded. Relief and nerves mixing together. He wasn’t rushing, but I could feel the weight of what was coming.

Before I left, he went over a few things to get ready for the MRI. He reminded me to keep track of my symptoms, stay hydrated, eat light the night before, and be ready in comfortable clothes. He wanted me to write down any questions I had about the procedure or what could come next.

When I stepped out of the office, I felt like I was bracing for more than a scan. I wasn’t just waiting on results. I was waiting to see what my next chapter with my body would look like.
