Lessons in Leadership

Some conferences leave you with notes. Others leave you transformed. The 2023 black women's leadership council was the latter.

Negotiation Beyond the Paycheck

One of the most powerful moments? A deep-dive session on negotiation—not just for salary, but for influence, respect, and long-term power. It wasn’t about asking for a seat at the table; it was about understanding the leverage you already have and using it strategically. The women on that panel didn’t just speak from theory—they came with receipts. They shared how they had navigated corporate spaces, boardrooms, and community leadership with precision. Their strategies weren’t just about getting what they deserved but about reshaping the landscape entirely.

Black Maternal Health: A Hard Truth

Another conversation that stuck with me? Black maternal health. But this wasn’t just a discussion. It was a moment of reckoning. I listened, engaged, and walked away with a deeper understanding of what we’re up against. It’s not about broken systems; it’s about systems that were designed to exclude us. That truth settled deep. The disparities in maternal health outcomes aren’t accidental—they’re the result of structural neglect and deliberate policy choices. And if we want real change, it means moving beyond awareness and into action.

The Power of Side Conversations

And then there were the side conversations. The ones in hallways, at lunch tables, in between sessions—where ideas turned into blueprints, and connections turned into collaborations. These weren’t just inspiring exchanges; they were catalysts. The kind of discussions that don’t just light a fire—they move you to do something.

BWLC 2023 wasn’t just another conference. It was a reminder that power isn’t given it’s negotiated, reclaimed, and built collectively. And the work doesn’t stop when the sessions end. It starts when we take what we’ve learned and make it real.
