Y’all, I’ve always wondered how some women can walk around almost naked and feel comfortable with it. Me? I’ve never been one for skimpy clothes. Sure, I’ve got some skirts and dresses above the knee, but they just gather dust in the back of my closet. Once, I wore a very questionable leather peplum to the beach and felt so uncomfortable, I had to tug it down every time I stood up. Then, one of my Cousin's friends looked at me and told me to sit down. Talk about embarrassing! But hey, I turned a lot of heads. When went to Sharky's, a guy waited outside the bathroom because he couldn’t approach me in front of the two intimidating men I was with. He asked me to go clubbing, and I blamed it on the skirt. I was dressed like I belonged in a club.
“Hello, I hate clubbing! Sweaty people, drunk folks, pervy guys looking to score? Hell no!”
Would my opinion be different if I was a size 10? Maybe. I doubt I could squeeze my Supersize self into a crop top, showing off a bulging belly and love handles. Ewww, no. Or put my thunder thighs into chicken fillet shorts (you know, those extra short shorts that leave booty meat hanging out like chicken fillets). I bought a pair a few months ago and will never wear them past my bedroom door. The first time I put them on, I thought they weren’t bad. Ten minutes later, when the denim was sinking into my butt crack, I decided chicken fillet shorts were not for me.
Most folks don’t know, I feel comfortable in loose clothes and wouldn’t trade them for anything. Well, for now. Maybe when I lose the weight and get those toned, cellulite-free thighs and a belly like Beyonce, I’ll feel comfortable wearing all sorts of nonsense labeled as clothing.
I’ve noticed some ladies my size or larger wearing crop tops, bandeaus, leggings, and shorts. But hey, who am I to judge? People can wear whatever they feel comfortable in. Just because I wouldn’t wear them doesn’t mean others shouldn’t. But some of them look ridiculous, as seen on Instagram. I shall not name and shame; it’s not my policy.
Sometimes I wonder, does dressing indecently make you less of a woman or reduce your value? I have a friend who loves her skimpy clothes, yet she’s happily married with a daughter and a husband who loves and respects her. Meanwhile, some women who look down on her struggle to get dates. Phaedra Parks calls herself a Southern belle and a pastor’s daughter, yet she wears outfits she probably shouldn’t.
I think a lady’s dress is personal, and a woman should wear what she wants without judgment. As long as what you’re wearing suits your size and figure, go for it.
