Why Black Women Are Often Pushed Toward Hysterectomy and Why It's Not the Only Option

Hey y’all

I’ve been meaning to speak on something that’s been bothering me for a while now. As Black women, especially those of us dealing with abnormal tissue growth in our reproductive system, it seems like we’re often only given one option when it comes to our health. Hysterectomy. There’s this assumption that we’re supposed to just accept it and move on like it’s the only solution. It’s not always the best choice and it’s definitely not the only option.

Here’s where I’m coming from. I’ve dealt with abnormal tissue growth for years. The pain, the bleeding, the exhaustion. It messes with your quality of life. On top of that, because of my intersex condition, my body’s never been “normal” down there to begin with. I’ve had to navigate a lot more than most people when it comes to reproductive health.

The doctors pushed hysterectomy on me at one point. It didn’t feel like a conversation. They didn’t offer alternatives, they didn’t listen to my concerns. Just take it out. I wasn’t comfortable with that. I wanted options. After talking it through with my doctors, I chose a myomectomy. The abnormal tissue growth was removed and my uterus stayed intact. I’ve had no problems since. I’ve been feeling better.

The moral of the story is that we have choices, even when it doesn’t feel like it. There are other options besides cutting everything out. We should never settle for the one route we’re given when it’s not the only way.

I know it’s tough to question your doctors. If they’re not giving you all your options, speak up and ask. Your body, your choice, your health.

To everyone dealing with this, know that you’re not alone. You have the right to explore all your options and make the best choice for you. Don’t let anyone rush you into a decision without giving you all the facts.

Hope this helps someone out there. 💜
