They want you to Wake Up but they don't want you "Woke"

People love to claim they’re not into “woke” music, but if you ask them their favorite artist, I could easily find a song in their catalog that fits the definition. That’s because, in today’s mindset, many think “woke” simply means Black, diverse, or LGBTQ+—but in reality, awareness is at the heart of it.

Yes, the term “woke” has deep roots in the Civil Rights era, when Black people empowered themselves and others through knowledge, activism, and music. But it’s bigger than that. It’s about being conscious—about society, struggle, resilience, and even the battles you don’t yet see coming.

Here’s a list of songs from different genres—rock, pop, hip-hop, and beyond—that are all about awareness, whether it’s understanding oppression, preparing for hardship, or recognizing the personal fights we all face:

1. John Lennon – "Imagine" (1971)
2. Bob Marley – "Redemption Song" (1980)
3. The Clash – "London Calling" (1979)
4. U2 – "Sunday Bloody Sunday" (1983)
5. Public Enemy – "Fight the Power" (1989)
6. Tears for Fears – "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" (1985)
7. Tupac Shakur – "Changes" (1998)
8. Rage Against the Machine – "Wake Up" (1992)
9. No Doubt – "Just a Girl" (1995)
10. Green Day – "American Idiot" (2004)
11. Donny Hathaway – "Someday We’ll All Be Free" (1973)
12. Curtis Mayfield – "Move On Up" (1970)

I could name more, but.....

At the end of the day, why wouldn’t you want to be aware? Why wouldn’t you prepare for the hurricane instead of sleeping through it? Awareness—being woke—is about staying ready. And yet, the same people who claim they’re always vigilant are the first to mock the idea of being awake.

That’s the world we live in. But while we stay aware, y’all can keep sleeping.
