When we consider what we owe, the first debts are obvious.
Parents.
Benefactors.
Communities.
But the deeper we think, the wider the circle becomes.
We owe something to our ancestors.
To our societies.
To the environment that sustains us.
Even to beauty itself.
The feeling of owing something to what is beautiful or sublime is one of the quiet roots of reverence.
