When Your Gut Talks, Listen

Sometimes, you just can’t ignore that little voice inside. Today it spoke loud and clear. I was heading out to grab some donuts from the cafĂ© in my building. I noticed a maintenance guy on the elevator, friendly enough, so I held the door and asked where he was headed. He said a floor, I pressed the button for him, smiled, said “Happy Holidays,” and stepped off to mind my own business.

But then, as I rounded the corner, I realized he was following me. My gut immediately said, something’s off. I paused, made a quick excuse, and headed toward the stairwell instead of my apartment. I could feel him watching from the elevator, not moving. So I laughed it off loud enough to sound casual and went a few steps out of sight.

By the grace of God, one of my neighbors came out at that moment. I let her know what was happening, and we started walking toward the lobby together. She confronted him calmly, asking if he was looking for someone. He tried to play it off like a game, but she held her ground. Eventually, he admitted he was on the wrong floor, got the proper directions, and finally left.

Later, I reflected on the small choice I made earlier to change into pants instead of lounging shorts. Not that it was the reason he acted strange—no one ever “asks” for attention like that—but my discernment kicked in. Something about that moment made me cautious, and God used it to protect me.

Sometimes, it’s not about being paranoid. It’s about paying attention, trusting your instincts, and letting them guide your actions. God protects, but He also equips.
