Y’all ever wonder why white, right-wing Christian evangelicals are all up in arms supporting Donald Trump? Well, the answer is pretty simple. Their agenda is his agenda. Trump and the Republican Party are on a mission to take away women’s reproductive rights and give special "conscience" protections to “Christians” who think their faith should trump (pun intended) the law. They see the poor, the disabled, and others as "useless eaters," and they’re dead set on protecting white privilege and the power of white right-wing Christians in all areas of American life. Trump is a mini-fascist and authoritarian, and right-wing Christians are all for it.
Too many so-called experts like to act like this is some big mystery. They go on and on about evangelical leaders giving Trump “mulligans” for his sins and other examples of right-wing Christian hypocrisy.
But the answer to this so-called mystery is just crude realpolitik. The context, logic, and implications of right-wing Christian support for Trump still matter, though.
Consider this.
By his words, deeds, and actions, Donald Trump is evil. Right-wing Christian evangelicals keep supporting him despite their obsession with the myth of the anti-Christ.
Why? Because Trump isn’t the anti-Christ to them; he’s their version of White Jesus. And they’ll twist themselves into all kinds of knots to justify it.
So yeah, it’s exhausting. It’s maddening. But it’s the reality we’re living in. Let’s not pretend it’s anything other than what it is.
