Party Pet Peeves

Growing up, I was the designated table-setter at home, a task I didn't appreciate much back then. My mom always insisted on setting the table properly, especially for special occasions when the fancy china came out. We'd refer to our old Betty Crocker Cookbook for guidance, which now has this funky green wrap around it, but back then, it was our table-setting bible.

Now that I'm all grown up, I realize the importance of those lessons. I can navigate a table setting at any restaurant like a pro, thanks to my mom's teachings. In the South, manners are everything. You greet people when you enter a room, you don't overload your appetizer plate, and you always RSVP with the right number of guests. It's all about respect and courtesy, values instilled in us since childhood.

Here are my top 10 table and party pet peeves:

  1. Don't pile your plate high with hors d'oeuvres at happy hour—it's not a buffet!

  2. Always RSVP for events and don't bring extra guests without asking—it's just plain rude.

  3. Remember to use utensils from the outside in.

  4. It's "sa-mon," not "sal-mon"—that L is silent!

  5. Don't reach over someone's plate—just ask politely to pass the dish.

  6. Hands off my food unless I offer you some!

  7. Servers, please refill glasses without touching the rim—it's gross!

  8. When splitting the bill, be prepared to pay your fair share, even if you only had a salad.

  9. Always offer to bring something when invited to someone's house—it's just good manners.

  10. And don't ask for a to-go plate unless the host offers—it's just not polite!
