Real Faith Means Understanding the Whole Story

One thing I’ve noticed is that some folks think if you view the Bible with a philosophical, thoughtful lens, you’re somehow lacking faith. But actually, taking the time to understand scripture deeply is faith in action. The Bible isn’t just a collection of stand-alone verses. Each verse connects to a larger story and context, which is key to seeing God’s full message.

Let’s be real: grabbing a verse here or there without context often leads to misunderstandings. Those scriptures weren’t written in isolation—they were spoken into specific times, cultures, and situations. As Paul says in 2 Timothy 3:16, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness.” But to truly apply it, we need to understand how it all fits together.

And not every line in the Bible is a direct order from God! Some scriptures simply describe human actions or experiences, which teach us moral, spiritual, or practical wisdom in a way that reflects life itself. Proverbs 4:7 reminds us, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” Faith isn’t just about memorizing lines; it’s about grasping their depth and meaning.

Yes, I approach the Bible with a reflective mindset—not because I doubt it, but because I want to truly understand what God is saying to us. If someone questions my faith because I go beyond surface-level readings, that says more about their approach than mine. As Paul warned, “Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers” (Philippians 3:2). True faith doesn’t just repeat words—it digs deep for the wisdom and understanding God calls us to seek.

So if you’ve ever felt conflicted about this, just remember: faith isn’t about just knowing verses, but knowing God’s heart.
